Capstone CMT-380 electric hybrid supercar with microturbines

If you’re thinking this will never make production, think again. Capstone already has commercial buses running and it will not be long before the same technology is brought to passenger cars. In theory, the turbine engine is perfect for an onboard generator to charge batteries. It runs very efficiently, while being compact and has the ability to run on almost any fuel. Only issue might be the jet like noise that it produces which remains to be seen whether it will be acceptable to buyers.

This is the future of hybrid motoring. It’s nice to know that there’ll still be awesome looking cars even after we switch to alternative fuels and energy sources.

GM 2011 Chevy Volt Test Drive – 2011 Chevrolet Volt Pre-Production Test Drive – Popular Mechanics

Popular Mechanics has scored a drive of the Chevy Volt. I’d say this would be the interim longer term future for hybrids. An engine running solely to provide a charge to run the motors. This makes use of the efficient constant RPM running of the engine as well as the instant torque of the electric motor. Also easier to package as the engines are not needed to drive the wheels and there’s no need for complicated control systems and transmission to accomodate both power from the motor and the engine a la Prius.

Perhaps there really is a future for electric cars powered by a battery. I’d say in the next decade, electric cars would be as commonplace as the hybrid car is today.
